Here is in There, a Master Thesis

After two years of research and work I completed my MFA Thesis at RISD. In this publication I examine, through my interest in space, how I have become conscious of the notion of place, and discuss the influences and referents that have informed this translation process. I structure my writing in four chapters, locating my work and ideas in accordance to the spatiotemporal sense of the here in relation to the there.

You can see a digital version of the book in this link.

Teaching at RISD

This year I taught my first class at the Rhode Island School of Design called “Repurposing the Glass Component: Mold Making as Simulacra”.

We revised the mold making tradition in the light of the challenges proposed by Baudrillard’s simulacra, and his concepts of serialization, modularity, representation, and original. We identified repetition, repurposing, and appropriation as creative strategies that propose the finished object as a modular unit, and created kiln-worked glass multiples to explore mid-scale three-dimensional options for the module.

Research Grant, Germany

Thanks to the generous Support of the Rhode Island School of Design Graduate Studies Grant for Research I spent one month traveling through Germany and France studying how glass behaves as a mediator of light in space. I investigated the origins and development of stained glass in relation to the contemporary applications of kiln-working processes in large-scale glass art.

Swarovski Collaboration

I had the great opportunity of collaborating with Swarovski Inc, world famous crystal producer. My piece "Render" was purchased by the firm to form part of their permanent collection at their head quarters offices in USA.

This volumetric render stands as the result of a thoughtful material study of Swarovski Elements and their relationship with glass. The crystal components are delicately arranged in relation to the topography of the glass shape, accentuating the sinuousness of the composition and their own reflective capacity.

Panelist at the Glass Art Society Annual Conference

I had the pleasure to be invited to participate as a panelist at 41st Glass Art Society Annual Conference in Seattle, WA, USA. Our panel, Different Voices for Unique Reasons, was conformed by Luisa Restrepo (Colombia), Ruth Moreno (Costa Rica), Isabel de Obaldía (Panamá), and myself, and was moderated by Ana Thiel (Méjico). We, as Latin American female artists, discussed the way in which we have developed our work in countries with no glass art communities, resources, galleries, schools, or collectors.
Along with the Panel, I curated and participated in a group show of young emerging Latin American artists that run parallel to the Conference in Far4 Gallery in Downtown Seattle.

Stained Glass for Pie Andino Church

I was commissioned in 2011 to create the central façade stained glass piece for Pie Andino Church. Combining the ecclesiastic symbolic elements of the local congregation with a personal graphic proposal, I gave origin to a 3 meters diameter piece that now stands 20meters up high.

Please visit the Pie Andino Church at Camino Pie Andino, La Dehesa, Santiago, Chile, to see the piece.

Artist in Residence at Northlands, Scotland

I was invited to participate as an Artist in Residence at the Northlands Creative Glass studios, located in Lybster, Scotland UK. During two months I focused my research in diverse kilnworking techniques with float and Bullseye Glass (courtesy of the company) and their interaction with different kinds of high temperature enamels and metal oxides. The result of these exploration were presented to public through the show Home / Away at the Quatre Brass Gallery and through a series of lectures with the local community.

Fellow artists in residence at the time were Mel Dougls (Australia), Elizabeth Perkins (USA), and Louse Tait (UK).
